Seoul's Relaxation Spot:Cheonggye Plaza[청계광장]

Cheonggye Plaza is the starting point of Cheonggyecheon stream and where the Cheonggyecheon restoration project began.

The 'Cheonggye' in Cheonggye Plaza is taken from Cheonggyecheon stream. To explain Cheonggyecheon in more detail, It is a 10.84km river that divides Jongno-gu and Jung-gu in Seoul.

[History]

청계천에 대한 공식기록은 조선의 한양 천도 당시부터입니다. 그 이전에는 이름도 붙여지지 않은 자연 상태의 하천이었으며 토사의 퇴적이 심하였고  민가에서 흘러나오는 하수로 오염되었고  여름철이 되면 범람과 홍수가 잦아 주변 가옥이 침수되거나 익사자가 발생하는 사고가 빈번하였다고 합니다.

조선의 태종 때에는 개거도감(하천관리를 위한 관청)을 두어 공사를 시작하였고, 그 뒤 영조 때에도 준설 공사를 대대적으로 하였으며, 양안(강이나 하천 따위의 양쪽 기슭)과  석축 (돌로 쌓아 만든 옹벽) 도 쌓았다고 합니다. 또한 준설 공사 및 유로 변경 공사를 시행하여 현재의 청계천 흐름의 큰 틀을 만들게 되었다고 합니다.

일제강점기부터 복개되면서 사실상 하천의 기능을 상실하였으며 본격적으로 복개공사가 이루어진 것은 1958년부터 1978년까지 진행되었다고 해요. 그 이유는  한국전쟁 직후에  가장 대표적인 슬럼지역이었으며 이 문제를 해결하기 위해 추진된 것이 청계천 복개사업이었다고 합니다.

그러나 1990년대에 들어 청계천의 복개 구조물과 노후한 고가도로의 안전 문제가 지속적으로 대두되었으며 또한 환경적 측면에서는 도심 대기환경을 개선하고자 하였습니다. 그래서 청계천 복원사업을 시작하였으며 구간은 중구 태평로 시점(동아일보사 건물)에서 동대문을 거쳐 성동구 신답철교까지 5.8km입니다. 2003년 7월 1일에 착공하여 2005년 10월 1일에 완공되었습니다. 복원은 구간별로 특징이 있는데 시점부터 광장시장까지 2km 구간은 역사와 전통, 청계광장에서 난계로까지 2.1km 구간은 문화와 현대를, 신답철교까지 1.7km 구간은 자연과 미래 개념으로 만들어졌다고 합니다.

청계광장(Cheonggye Plaza)은 서울 종로구 서린동 14-1에 위치한  청계천에 딸린 작은 광장이자, 청계천의 출발지입니다. 인근에는 동아일보사 사옥과 SK빌딩이 있습니다.

[What to See at Cheonggye Plaza]

1. Seoul Lantern Festival(서울빛초롱축제)

The Seoul Lantern Festival began in 2009 and is held every year during the winter season from December to January. 

As Seoul's representative nighttime light festival, it offers spectacular sights such as light sculpture exhibitions and various experience programs.

2. Filming location for K-dramas and movies.

Cheonggye Plaza and Cheonggyecheon Stream were used as filming locations for dramas such as 내 남편과 결혼해 줘, 도시남녀의 사랑법, 눈물의 여왕, 아이리스, 시그널, 건축학개론, 7인의 탈출, 열녀박 씨 계약 결혼뎐 등이 있어요.
It is one of the most filmed locations in Seoul in 2024.

So, this place is one of the representative landmarks of Seoul and has many photo zones.

 

3.A resting place with clean water in the city center

Cheonggye Plaza has a candlelight fountain and a 4m high two-tiered waterfall. On both sides of the two-tiered waterfall are stone walls made of eight different types of stones imported from all over the country, and a miniature replica of the entire Cheonggyecheon Stream is also installed, providing visitors with ample space to relax.

이곳에서 청계천 물길이 시작되며, 광장을 중심으로 문화조형물, 물줄기 분수 등 시민을 위한 휴식 공간이 잘 조성돼 있어요.

해가 질 무렵 청계광장을 걷다 보면 도심 속 빌딩 사이로 노을이 퍼지고, 물소리와 어우러져 잠시 시간을 잊게 만듭니다.
특히 계절별로 다른 문화행사가 열리는 경우도 많아, 방문 전 서울시 홈페이지에서 행사 정보를 확인하는 것도 추천해요.
